About
Throughout history, women have traditionally fulfilled the role of the muse; overlooked and destined to be the object of art, but never the subject. Well, not anymore!
Some of the most popular artists and performers around right now are women, but if festival lineups and award nominations are anything to go by, there is a noticeable lack of female representation in the music industry – particularly when it comes to more alternative genres. Women and non-binary people are there alright, but the equal footing is not. And whilst the conversation around it is evolving, we’re still nowhere near where we need to be.
Thus, the idea for Mean Muse Magazine was born: an online publication committed to supporting the creative work of women and non-binary people in alternative music, and carving a space for their voices to be heard. Hell, even our logo itself is an ode to one of the forebears of women in rock and inspiration behind it all: Joan Jett.
So, there you have it. We want to celebrate the alternative scene and build a community of the women and non-binary people powering it from within. From musicians to photographers, journalists and A&R reps – you name it, we want to include it. There is so much talent out there, so why not shout about it!?
We don’t want men out of the industry, just more women & non-binary people in it!
